low_glycemic_carbs_are_betterAccording to a new study, a diet full of slowly digested carbohydrates, such as whole grains and legumes, significantly decreases inflammation linked to chronic diseases in obese and overweight adults. Researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research center in Seattle discovered that a low-glycemic load also increases a hormone that aids in the metabolism of fat and sugar, and doesn't cause blood-glucose levels to rise sharply.

Glycemic load is a measure of carbohydrates affect on blood-sugar levels. For example, lentils and pinto beans have glycemic loads that are much lower than instant mashed potatoes, and won't cause blood-sugar levels to increase as quickly. Other low glycemic foods include beans, milk, various fruits, and most vegetables. The researchers recommend avoiding foods high in white sugar and white flour, and sugar-rich beverages and breakfast cereals.
